What People are Saying

“Thank you for arranging a lovely sojourn in San Giovanni. I was so impressed with the language classes, overall organization, and excursions! Cooking was fun. All in all it was a great experience.”  Patty, USA

“I really had a great time! In fact my sister came over and we stayed on in San Giovanni for another 6 nights and just drove all over the hill towns from there. I really liked San Giovanni. You did a great job.”  Gayna, USA

“The teachers I had were absolutely great! In 2 weeks I had limited objectives, but each day I felt like I was making progress.”

Cultural & Recreational Activities

The surrounding area offers great walking and biking opportunities through the countryside and mountains: visit Romanesque churches, the Medieval Monastery of Montecarlo, Santa Barbara Lake, the Chianti hills, Le Blaze, and other Tuscan towns. Swimming pools, tennis courts, soccer fields and horseback riding are nearby, as well as shopping (Prada) and locally made glassware. Special events take place year-round — for example, in February, the Carnival Town Parades, in April, the Valdarno Cinema Fedic (Italian Film Festival), Spring Music Festivals, and more!

Accommodation Choices

Hotel, host family stay, studio apartment; Agriturismo packages available upon request. Agriturismo’s are small hotels or farmhouses (you’ll need a rental car to get to school) usually run by a family and considered a premium accommodation, often with swimming pools, horseback riding and lovely gardens.

Drawing and Painting

Halfway between Florence and Arezzo, not far from Siena, the Valdarno region is perfectly situated for artistic itineraries. The Drawing Course (not recommended for Italian beginners) includes an introduction to (or a review of) the drawing techniques such as real-life charcoal drawing using the proportional method and study of chiaroscuro, and study of real-life composition, as well as copy from the great masters (portrait and figure), and study of Tuscan landscape. The painting course offers the opportunity to learn the use of watercolor or tempera, with study of real-life compositions and Tuscan landscape; and for the most advanced, even the copy from great masters. Due to the difficulty of watercolor techniques, the students wishing to study them should have a good basis of Drawing. Lessons are held in afternoons/evenings 2 times a week for 2 hours. For Drawing and Painting courses students do not have to speak Italian because it is practical, not theory.
